Half a dozen children’s hospitals in Ohio, including their CEOs and the Association of Ohio Hospital children, raised alarms about the increasing number of Covid-19 cases in children, including some very severe so they needed respiratory assistance. Details about this issue are published in the latest letter signed by the CEO of the Rosmital Children.
The letter was published [PDF] recently by the Association of Ohio Children Hospital and it was signed by the CEO of the following hospital: Akron Children’s Hospital, Dayton Children’s, Promedica Russell Children’s Hospital, Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital, Children Children Nationwide, and Cincinnati children.
According to the letter, this hospital has seen a surge in the number of children with Covid-19, especially a very contagious Delta variant. More children appear in hospitals that present Covid-19 symptoms, and more cases of Pediatric Covid-19 involve the ICU “from before.”
Beyond that, the hospital also warned that they saw other lung diseases such as RSV at levels which were usually not experienced until the peak season during the winter. All of these problems collide in a way that pursues children’s hospitals, with a letter that records, “This is the reality for us today. And it threatens our pediatric safety net capacity in a way that we have never experienced before.”
The country currently has the second largest case of Pediatric Covid-19 in the US, according to ABC News, who recently talked to children’s hospital workers in Ohio. Dayton Children Hospital has reported a number of Covid-19 cases involving children, with one nurse calling “astronomical”.
The warning occurred in the midst of a broader problem found in hospitals in many countries: high or max capacity was mostly driven by people who were not vaccinated which signed Covid-19 and developed severe infections. Although older adults are the most vulnerable age group for viruses, the Delta variant has triggered an increase in cases – and death – among the youngest countries. The best way to help protect these children is to be vaccinated.
